What is Generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews to find, trust, quote and cite. It builds on SEO but optimises for being the source of an answer rather than a ranked link.
Why it matters for hospitals
A growing share of health and hospital questions are answered inside an AI response. If the answer is assembled from other sources, the hospital loses visibility even when it ranks well in classic search, and patients may receive outdated or wrong information about it.
How to put it into practice
- Lead each section with a direct, self-contained answer of 40 to 60 words.
- Keep facts about doctors, specialties, locations and accreditations identical everywhere they appear.
- Use structured data (Organization, Physician, MedicalClinic, FAQ) and keep it accurate.
- Cite primary sources and date your figures so AI systems can judge freshness.
- Run a regular AI answer audit: ask assistants the questions patients ask and record what they say.
The common mistake
Writing for AI with keyword-stuffed pages. Generative systems reward clarity, specificity and corroboration, not repetition.
An illustrative example
A cardiac centre rewrites its procedure pages so each opens with a plain answer to the patient’s question, adds a dated cost-drivers section and fixes inconsistent doctor names across listings. Within a quarter it begins appearing as a cited source in AI answers for its city. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
