What is Answer engine?
An answer engine is a search tool that replies to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. Examples include Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. It reads many sources, then summarises and sometimes cites them.
Why it matters for hospitals
Answer engines change who the patient trusts. The answer, not the hospital website, becomes the first impression. Hospitals that are cited gain credibility; those that are not become invisible for that question, even if their page ranks.
How to put it into practice
- List the 50 questions patients most often ask before choosing a hospital or doctor.
- Ask each question in two or three answer engines and record which sources are cited.
- Fill the gaps with pages that answer the question directly and accurately.
- Re-check every quarter, because answer engines change their sources frequently.
The common mistake
Assuming a first-page Google ranking means you are visible. Answer engines often cite different sources from the top organic results.
An illustrative example
An IVF clinic finds that answer engines describe its city’s IVF costs using a three-year-old news article. It publishes a dated, transparent cost-drivers page that the engines begin citing instead. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
