The short answer
India had about 958 million active internet users in 2025, more than half of them rural, and 86% of households have internet at home. Private hospitals handle around 60% of hospitalisations at more than seven times the out-of-pocket cost of public ones. Digital is now about 60% of India’s ad spend, and healthcare is one of the most complained-about ad categories, with nearly all violations online. Hospitals that win are mobile-first, multilingual, transparent on price and insurance, and compliant by design.

What these numbers mean for hospital marketing
- Design for the phone and WhatsApp first. With smartphones in 85% of households and WhatsApp past 500 million users, the booking path should work in one thumb and continue on chat.
- Publish in Indian languages and on video. Nearly all internet users consume Indian-language content and health video draws hundreds of billions of views a year. See the glossary for plain-language terms to start with.
- Make price and insurance clear. The gap between private and public out-of-pocket costs, and rising insurance coverage, means estimate pages and cashless information are conversion content, not admin pages.
- Treat compliance as part of the brief. Healthcare ads draw a large share of ASCI complaints, and DPDP penalties run to hundreds of crores. Build consent, claims review and data minimisation into every campaign.
- Connect to ABDM. ABHA-linked records and scan-and-share tokens are already at scale, so registration, records and follow-up journeys should use them.
- Be ready to be cited by AI. With AI features used by 44% of internet users, clear, sourced answers like the ones on this page are what AI assistants quote.
