What is Zero-click search?

A zero-click search is one where the user gets what they need on the results page itself, from a map pack, knowledge panel, featured snippet or AI overview, and never clicks through to a website. For hospitals this is common for phone numbers, timings, directions and simple questions.

Why it matters for hospitals

Website traffic can fall while patient demand stays the same, because the answer was delivered on the results page. Hospitals that measure success only by sessions misread this as decline and cut the wrong budgets.

How to put it into practice

  • Track calls, direction requests and bookings from your map listings, not just website visits.
  • Keep listing details, hours and services accurate, because they are the answer users see.
  • Measure impressions and branded search volume in Search Console alongside clicks.
  • Make sure pages that do earn clicks offer something the results page cannot: booking, estimates, doctor detail.

The common mistake

Treating falling click-through rate as a content failure. Often it is a measurement problem: the patient got the number and called.

An illustrative example

A hospital’s website sessions drop after AI Overviews launch in its market, but listing calls rise. Reporting both together shows enquiry volume is steady. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
