What is Digital front door?
A hospital’s digital front door is every online surface a patient uses to reach it for the first time: search results, map listings, the website, doctor pages, WhatsApp, the app, chatbots and the contact centre. For most patients it is now the real first encounter, before the building.
Why it matters for hospitals
Patients judge a hospital on the speed and clarity of that first digital contact. A slow site, a wrong phone number on a map listing or an unanswered WhatsApp message loses the enquiry before any clinician is involved, and the loss never shows up in the hospital’s own reports.
How to put it into practice
- Map every entry point a patient can use, including third-party listings and aggregator profiles you do not control.
- Measure time to first response and enquiry-to-appointment rate for each entry point, not just website traffic.
- Give one owner end-to-end accountability, from search listing to booked appointment.
- Test it as a patient each month: search, call, message and book, on a mid-range phone.
The common mistake
Treating the front door as a website project. The website is one door among many; the map listing and the call centre often carry more enquiries.
An illustrative example
A multi-specialty hospital adds a lobby renovation to its plan while its map listing still shows an old OPD number. Fixing the listing and routing WhatsApp to a staffed queue costs far less and recovers enquiries within weeks. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
