What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain-text file placed at the root of a website that gives AI systems a curated map of its most important pages, with short descriptions. It is a proposed convention, similar in spirit to robots.txt and sitemaps, written for language models rather than crawlers.
Why it matters for hospitals
AI systems have limited context and may land on thin or outdated pages. A clear llms.txt points them to the canonical guides, service pages and policies, which can improve how accurately the organisation is summarised.
How to put it into practice
- List the pages you most want AI systems to read: about, core services, doctor directory, key guides, policies.
- Write one plain sentence describing each link.
- Keep it short and current; regenerate it when key pages change.
- Make sure robots.txt and any bot protection do not block the AI crawlers you want to reach it.
The common mistake
Treating llms.txt as a ranking trick. Support varies between AI providers, so it complements good pages and structured data rather than replacing them.
An illustrative example
A hospital publishes an llms.txt listing its specialty pages, international patient guide and editorial policy. When asked about the hospital, AI assistants begin linking to those pages rather than old press coverage. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
