What is Chatbot?

A hospital chatbot is software that answers patient questions and completes simple tasks through text or voice, on a website, app or WhatsApp. Typical jobs are finding a doctor, booking or rescheduling appointments, sharing timings and costs, and routing complex or clinical questions to people. Modern chatbots often use generative AI with guardrails that stop them giving medical advice.

Why it matters for hospitals

Enquiries arrive at all hours, and many are repetitive questions about timings, doctors and packages. A good chatbot captures after-hours demand and frees staff for complex calls. A bad one frustrates patients, leaks leads or strays into clinical advice.

How to put it into practice

  • Define the top ten tasks the bot must complete end to end before launch.
  • Ground answers in approved content: doctor directory, timings, package rates and FAQs.
  • Block diagnosis and treatment advice, and hand over quickly to a human for symptoms or emergencies.
  • Send every conversation and lead into the CRM with its source.
  • Measure resolution and booked appointments, not just conversations started.

The common mistake

Measuring success by how many chats the bot kept away from humans. Containment without resolution means patients gave up.

An illustrative example

A hospital launched a WhatsApp and website bot for doctor search and booking only. Within three months it handled most after-hours enquiries, and the call centre focused on complex cases. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
