What is WhatsApp Business API?

The WhatsApp Business API, now offered by Meta as the WhatsApp Business Platform, lets organisations send and receive WhatsApp messages at scale through approved providers. Hospitals use it for appointment booking, reminders, reports, payments and support, with message templates approved by Meta and conversations connected to a CRM or hospital information system.

Why it matters for hospitals

For many Indian patients WhatsApp is the most natural way to reach a hospital, especially after hours. The API turns it from a single phone on a front desk into a shared, measurable channel that can route, automate and record conversations. It also needs opt-in, template discipline and data protection, because health conversations are sensitive.

How to put it into practice

  • Start with three jobs: booking, reminders and report delivery, then add more once those run cleanly.
  • Collect explicit opt-in with a clear purpose, and store it in your CRM.
  • Connect the API to your CRM so every conversation creates or updates a patient record.
  • Set handover rules so a human agent takes over for anything clinical, urgent or emotional.
  • Review Meta’s current pricing and template category rules before you budget campaigns.

The common mistake

Using the API mainly to broadcast offers. Patients mute or block, quality ratings drop, and the channel stops working for reminders too.

An illustrative example

A mother-and-child hospital moved antenatal reminders and scan bookings to WhatsApp with a human fallback. Missed scan appointments fell and front desk calls during peak hours dropped noticeably. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
