What is Review velocity?

Review velocity is the rate at which a hospital, clinic or doctor gains new online reviews, usually measured per month on Google and major doctor platforms. A steady flow of recent, genuine reviews signals an active, trusted practice to patients and search engines, whereas a sudden burst followed by silence can look unnatural.

Why it matters for hospitals

Patients read recent reviews, not the total count, before choosing a hospital. Freshness and steady volume also support local pack visibility. A hospital that asked for reviews only during a launch campaign will see its profile age quickly.

How to put it into practice

  • Build a review request into the discharge and post-OPD follow-up journey by SMS or WhatsApp, with consent.
  • Ask every patient the same way; do not filter only happy patients.
  • Never offer incentives or write reviews on patients’ behalf, and check platform rules and current regulatory guidance on testimonials.
  • Track monthly reviews by location and department, and set a steady target.
  • Respond to all reviews without confirming that the reviewer was a patient or sharing any details.

The common mistake

Running a one-off drive where staff collect dozens of reviews in a week, which can trigger platform filters and then leaves months of silence.

An illustrative example

A multi-unit hospital added a review link to its post-discharge WhatsApp message. Each unit began receiving a steady stream of reviews every month, and the share of recent reviews on its profiles rose. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
