What is Local pack?

The local pack is the block of a map and usually three business listings that Google shows for searches with local intent, such as “cardiologist in Pune” or “hospital near me”. Listings are drawn from Google Business Profiles and ranked mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, which includes reviews, links and how well known the hospital is.

Why it matters for hospitals

For specialty searches in a city, the local pack sits above most organic results and takes a large share of calls and direction clicks. A hospital that ranks well on its own website but is missing from the pack loses patients to the clinic down the road. Each specialty and location is a separate contest.

How to put it into practice

  • List the specialty searches that matter by location and check pack visibility from different parts of the catchment.
  • Set accurate primary and secondary categories, and describe services on the profile in the words patients use.
  • Build a steady flow of genuine reviews and respond to them.
  • Link each profile to a strong location page that covers the specialties offered there.
  • Earn local citations and mentions from credible local sources.

The common mistake

Checking rankings only from the hospital’s own office, where distance makes it look strong, and missing that patients five kilometres away never see it.

An illustrative example

An orthopaedic centre appeared in the pack for “knee replacement” only within two kilometres. After adding category and service detail, improving its location page and growing reviews, it began appearing across more of its city catchment. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
