What is Patient experience?
Patient experience is the sum of every interaction a patient and family have with a hospital, from first search and call to registration, waiting, consultation, billing, discharge and follow-up. It covers communication, respect, ease and comfort, not just clinical outcome. In India, the family’s experience often matters as much as the patient’s.
Why it matters for hospitals
Experience drives online reviews, word of mouth and whether patients return, which makes it a marketing asset. Small fixes in waiting, billing and communication often improve reviews more than any campaign.
How to put it into practice
- Map the full journey and measure the moments that cause most complaints.
- Collect feedback at key points, such as after OPD and after discharge.
- Give front desk and call centre teams scripts and authority to solve common issues.
- Share review themes with operations monthly.
- Treat billing and insurance communication as part of experience.
The common mistake
Treating patient experience as a survey score owned by one department instead of a shared responsibility.
An illustrative example
A hospital found most negative reviews were about discharge delays. It set a discharge time target and sent updates to families. Review ratings improved. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
