What is Cashless experience?
The cashless experience is the insured patient’s journey when the hospital bills the insurer or TPA directly: pre-authorisation, admission, enhancements and discharge approval. IRDAI expects insurers to decide cashless requests within one hour and discharge authorisation within three hours.
Why it matters for hospitals
For insured patients the speed and transparency of cashless is part of the hospital’s brand. Long discharge waits and surprise deductions are among the most common complaints, and they show up in reviews.
How to put it into practice
- Publish the insurers and TPAs you accept on every specialty page.
- Explain the pre-authorisation process and documents needed before admission.
- Measure discharge-to-exit time for cashless patients and report it weekly.
- Brief patients on non-payable items before admission, not at discharge.
The common mistake
Treating cashless as a billing back-office function. Patients experience it as part of their care.
An illustrative example
A hospital adds a pre-admission checklist and a dedicated insurance desk WhatsApp number. Discharge-related complaints in reviews fall. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
