What is TPA?
A third-party administrator (TPA) is an IRDAI-licensed intermediary that processes health insurance claims on behalf of insurers, including cashless pre-authorisations and reimbursements. In India many insured hospital admissions run through a TPA rather than the insurer directly.
Why it matters for hospitals
TPAs influence how quickly patients get approvals and how smoothly they are discharged. Strong TPA relationships improve the cashless experience and can make a hospital the preferred choice in insurer and corporate networks.
How to put it into practice
- Track approval times and query rates by TPA.
- Hold regular reviews with the TPAs that handle most of your insured volume.
- Keep tariff agreements and package rates current in your billing system.
- Share network-hospital status on your website so patients can confirm before admission.
The common mistake
Seeing TPAs only as a source of delays. They are also a referral and network channel.
An illustrative example
A hospital notices one TPA’s queries delay discharges by hours. A joint document checklist cuts the query rate and the patient wait. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
