Google will now point AI answers to official pages. Make sure your hospital’s is the one

Google said on 15 October that it will test a dedicated section at the top of some AI answers for the one or two official pages a task needs. For hospitals, this is the AI search change that matters most this year, and it is about tasks, not citations.

What happened

In a post on 15 October, Google announced several changes to AI Mode and AI Overviews. Inline links will appear higher in AI responses more often. Where only one or two official places on the web can complete a task, Google will test a display that surfaces those links in a section at the top of the answer, with context on why each one is useful. Timely article carousels are expanding to more locations and languages, and Google said use of its Preferred Sources feature has grown more than seven times since January.

See every AI in healthcare operations guide in one place.

This lands on top of Search Console’s Generative AI performance report, which Google rolled out to all sites worldwide on 31 August. That report shows how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It shows impressions only, not clicks.

My take

Most generative engine optimization talk in healthcare is about being cited when someone asks a medical question: what is the best treatment for a slipped disc, how long does knee replacement recovery take. Those are information queries, and hospitals compete there with government portals, journals and large health publishers.

The official-pages test is about task queries. Book with a named doctor. Get an estimate for a bypass. Download my lab report. Find the TPA list. For those, there is usually one right answer, and it should be the hospital’s own page.

If Google cannot tell which page is the official one, it will choose something else: a listing on an aggregator, an old campaign microsite, a PDF from three years ago. This is where getting a hospital cited by AI search has its most direct payoff, because a task answer leads straight to a booking or an enquiry.

What most coverage missed

Most of the coverage is about publishers and lost clicks. For hospitals the bigger risk is duplication. A multi-unit group often has several pages that each look official for the same task: a group booking page, a unit booking page, an app link, a doctor profile on a third-party platform and a stray landing page from an old campaign. Ambiguity is what stops a page being picked as the official one.

Measurement is the second gap. The Search Console report tells you a page appeared, not whether anyone acted. Task pages are the one place you can close that loop, because the outcome, a booking or an estimate request, happens on your own site and can be counted.

What I would do

  • List the ten tasks patients most often try to complete online: book, reschedule, get an estimate, collect reports, find a doctor, check insurance and TPA tie-ups, get directions, make an international enquiry, pay a bill, find visiting hours.
  • Name one canonical URL for each task. Redirect or canonicalise the duplicates, including old campaign pages.
  • Make each page complete the task on the page, and open with one plain sentence that says what the page is for.
  • Add structured data and keep names, addresses and phone numbers identical everywhere.
  • Each month, check those URLs in Search Console’s Generative AI report and set them against bookings and enquiries from the same pages.
  • Run the task questions through the main AI assistants and record what comes back, as covered in what AI assistants say about your hospital.

What to watch

  • Whether the official-pages section moves beyond a test, and when it reaches India.
  • Whether Search Console adds click data to the Generative AI report.
  • How often health queries trigger the new section, given that Google already limits AI Overviews on some health searches.

Questions people ask

What did Google change in AI Mode and AI Overviews on 15 October 2026?

Google said inline links will appear higher in AI responses more often, it will test a section for official pages at the top of some answers, timely article carousels are expanding to more regions, and links at the end of answers get thumbnails.

What is the official pages section in Google AI answers?

A test display that, when only one or two official places on the web can complete a task, shows those links in a dedicated section at the top of the AI response with context on why each is useful.

Why does this matter for hospitals?

Many patient searches are tasks, such as booking, estimates and reports. If a hospital’s own page is clearly the official one for each task, it is more likely to be the link the AI answer puts first.

Does Search Console show clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Not in the dedicated Generative AI report, which shows impressions only. Clicks from these features are still counted inside the main Search performance report.

How is this different from generative engine optimization?

It is part of it. Most GEO work targets citations on information questions. The official-pages test rewards being the single, unambiguous page for a task, which depends more on site structure and duplication than on content volume.
