What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results, answering the query directly and linking to the web pages used as sources. They are available in India, including in several Indian languages. For health queries they reduce clicks to ordinary results but create a new chance to be the cited source.
Why it matters for hospitals
Many patient research questions about symptoms, procedures, costs and recovery now trigger an AI Overview. Hospitals cited in it gain visibility at the moment a patient forms a view; those not cited may lose traffic even while ranking well. Google applies extra caution to health topics, which favours trusted, expert sources.
How to put it into practice
- Track which priority queries show an AI Overview and which sources are cited.
- Write clear, direct answers backed by named medical reviewers and credible references.
- Keep doctor, location and service facts consistent across the website, profiles and directories.
- Use structured data to make entities and facts easy to read.
- Measure branded search, calls and enquiries, not only clicks, since visibility may not produce a visit.
The common mistake
Assuming falling organic clicks mean falling demand, when patients may be getting answers in the AI Overview and searching the hospital name later.
An illustrative example
A hospital tracked 50 treatment questions and found AI Overviews cited directories and media sites instead of its own pages. Rewriting key pages with direct answers and doctor review led to the hospital being cited for several of them. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
