What is Featured snippet?
A featured snippet is a highlighted answer Google sometimes shows above the regular results, quoting a short paragraph, list or table from one web page with a link to it. For hospitals, snippets typically appear for questions such as “how long is recovery after a C-section” or “what is an angiogram”. They now sit alongside AI Overviews on many queries.
Why it matters for hospitals
A snippet puts the hospital’s name and expertise in front of patients at the research stage. Even when it reduces clicks, it builds recognition and trust. The same clear question and answer formatting also helps content get picked up by AI answers.
How to put it into practice
- Find questions where the hospital already ranks on page one and a snippet is shown.
- Answer the question directly in 40 to 60 words right under a heading that repeats it.
- Use numbered lists for steps and simple tables for comparisons.
- Keep the answer medically accurate, reviewed and dated.
- Follow the short answer with detail and a clear next step such as booking a consultation.
The common mistake
Burying the answer under long introductions about the hospital’s history, so Google quotes a competitor’s clearer paragraph instead.
An illustrative example
A hospital rewrote its angiography page to open with a plain two-sentence answer followed by a step list. The page began appearing as the snippet for several related questions. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
