Fortis is telling patients to ask a doctor before AI. Who answers first?

On 12 October 2026, Fortis Healthcare and agency RepIndia launched #ConsultFirst, a digital campaign asking people to see a qualified doctor before turning to search, AI tools or home remedies. I like the instinct. But a hospital cannot scold patients out of a habit. It has to out-answer the tools they already use.

What happened

IMPACT reported on 12 October 2026 that Fortis Healthcare and RepIndia have launched #ConsultFirst. The campaign targets a habit every hospital marketer knows: people look up symptoms online, on AI platforms or with friends and family before they ever book a doctor.

The message, as reported, is that health information and a professional medical assessment are not the same thing. Search engines and AI tools may not account for a person’s history or specific symptoms. The work runs across digital platforms, including JioHotstar. The coverage carries no budget, reach numbers or quotes.

My take

I cannot recall a large Indian hospital brand naming AI tools this directly in a consumer campaign. That matters. It admits, in public, that the first consult has already moved off the hospital’s turf.

But a campaign that says “don’t ask the chatbot” is fighting the patient’s reality. People go to search and AI at 11 pm because it is free, instant and does not judge them. An ad on JioHotstar does not change that. What changes it is a hospital that is just as easy to reach at 11 pm.

So I read #ConsultFirst as a brand promise that the product now has to keep. If I see the ad, tap through and land on a callback form that nobody answers until morning, the campaign has just sent me back to the chatbot with a worse opinion of the hospital.

What most coverage missed

The real competitor is not “the internet”. It is AI answers that now sit above every hospital’s website in search. When a patient asks about chest pain or a lump, the answer box sets the frame before any hospital page loads. Hospitals that publish clear, doctor reviewed, structured content get cited in those answers. Hospitals that publish brochures do not.

There is also a quiet trust risk. Telling people that AI is unreliable is a fine message only if the hospital’s own chatbot, WhatsApp bot and symptom pages are visibly better. Patients will hold the brand to its own standard.

What I would do

  • Make the first consult the product: a teleconsult or nurse callback within minutes, priced openly, bookable from the ad.
  • Publish doctor reviewed answers to the top 200 symptom searches in your cities, in English and Hindi, built to be cited by AI answers.
  • Measure the campaign on booked and honoured consults, not views.
  • If you run a bot, label it clearly and hand off to a human fast. Do not become the thing your ad warns against.

What to watch

  • Whether Fortis pairs the campaign with a faster digital consult offer.
  • Whether other chains copy the “see a doctor first” framing, and how AI answer engines treat hospital content in health queries.

Questions people ask

What is the Fortis #ConsultFirst campaign?

It is a digital campaign by Fortis Healthcare and RepIndia, reported on 12 October 2026, that urges people to consult a qualified doctor before relying on online searches, AI tools, home remedies or advice from friends and family.

Why are hospitals worried about AI self-diagnosis?

Patients increasingly form an opinion before they book. If that opinion is wrong or delays care, the hospital meets the patient later and sicker. Commercially, the hospital also loses the first conversation to a tool it does not control.

Can a campaign stop people from using AI for health questions?

Unlikely on its own. People use search and AI because they are instant and free. A hospital changes behaviour by making its own first consult just as easy, fast and clearly priced.

What should a hospital’s digital team do alongside such a campaign?

Offer a fast, bookable first consult from every ad, publish doctor reviewed symptom content that AI answers can cite, label any chatbot clearly, and report results as booked and honoured consults.
