What is YMYL (Your Money or Your Life)?

YMYL, short for Your Money or Your Life, is the term Google’s quality rater guidelines use for topics that could significantly affect a person’s health, finances, safety or wellbeing. Medical information is a clear YMYL category, so hospital and doctor websites are held to stricter standards of accuracy, expertise and trust than most other sites.

Why it matters for hospitals

Because health is YMYL, thin, copied or unreviewed content can hold back a hospital site, and errors carry real patient risk. It also explains why big publishers and government health sites often outrank hospitals. Treating content as a clinical responsibility, not just a marketing task, is the response.

How to put it into practice

  • Classify pages by risk: treatment and symptom content needs medical review, while visiting hours pages need accuracy checks.
  • Use qualified medical reviewers and record who approved what and when.
  • Avoid promising outcomes, cure claims or comparative superiority.
  • Remove or update outdated clinical content rather than leaving it live.
  • Keep marketing copy separate from clinical information on treatment pages.

The common mistake

Publishing large volumes of AI-written symptom articles without medical review, in a category where Google expects the highest level of care.

An illustrative example

A cardiac hospital had hundreds of old blog posts with outdated advice. It pruned weak posts, merged overlapping ones and put the rest through doctor review, ending up with fewer but stronger pages. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
