What is Press release?
A healthcare press release is a short, factual announcement written for journalists about hospital news such as a new unit, a technology, a rare procedure, a partnership or a public health initiative. It gives the news, why it matters to readers, verified facts and a spokesperson quote, while avoiding cure claims and patient identification without consent.
Why it matters for hospitals
Earned coverage builds credibility that ads cannot, and news articles are often cited by search engines and AI assistants. But most hospital releases are ignored because they read like ads. A release journalists can use quickly is the difference between coverage and the bin.
How to put it into practice
- Lead with the news and the local relevance in the first two sentences.
- Use specific, verifiable facts and avoid “first”, “only” or “best” unless you can prove it.
- Get written consent before naming or picturing any patient, and clear clinical claims with the medical team.
- Offer a doctor who can speak in the local language and is available that day.
- Publish the release on your own newsroom page so it can be found and cited later.
The common mistake
Writing the release as a promotional brochure. Journalists want news and public interest, not adjectives.
An illustrative example
A tier 2 hospital announced its first cath lab with a release focused on reduced travel time for heart attack patients in the district. Two regional papers ran it, and the newsroom page started ranking for local searches. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
