What is no-show rate?

No-show rate is the percentage of booked appointments where the patient neither attends nor cancels in advance. In Indian hospitals and clinics, it directly reduces doctor utilisation and OPD revenue, and it is often highest for free or online bookings made without confirmation, which is why it belongs in every marketing and contact centre review.

Why it matters for hospitals

A booking that does not turn up is marketing spend wasted and a slot that another patient could have used. High no-show rates distort lead and booking reports, making campaigns look better than they are. Small improvements in attendance can add more OPD volume than a new campaign.

How to put it into practice

  • Measure it by doctor, specialty, channel and lead time between booking and appointment.
  • Send confirmations and reminders by SMS or WhatsApp with consent, and an easy way to reschedule.
  • Call high-value or first-time bookings the day before.
  • Offer earlier slots, since long waits between booking and visit raise no-shows.
  • Report cost per honoured appointment, not just cost per booking.

The common mistake

Overbooking doctors to cover no-shows, which creates long waits on good days and hurts the experience of patients who did come.

An illustrative example

A clinic found no-shows were highest for bookings made more than a week ahead. Adding a WhatsApp reminder two days before and a one-tap reschedule option reduced missed slots noticeably. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
