What is Local citation?

A local citation is any online mention of a hospital or clinic’s name, address and phone number, with or without a link, on directories, maps, insurer and TPA network lists, association sites, local news or social profiles. In India, important citations include doctor platforms such as Practo, local directories such as Justdial, and maps apps.

Why it matters for hospitals

Citations help search engines confirm a hospital exists where it says it does, and they are often where patients find a phone number. Wrong or duplicate citations spread errors and send calls elsewhere. Building accurate citations is basic local SEO hygiene for every new unit.

How to put it into practice

  • Start with a master record per location before creating or editing any listing.
  • Cover the main maps services, doctor platforms, local directories and insurer network lists.
  • Add specialty-specific and city-specific directories that patients actually use.
  • Claim existing listings before creating new ones to avoid duplicates.
  • Audit citations every six months and after any change of address or number.

The common mistake

Paying for bulk submissions to hundreds of low-quality directories, which creates errors that are harder to fix than to prevent.

An illustrative example

Before opening a new satellite clinic, a hospital set up its maps listings, doctor platform profiles and directory entries from one master record. Patients searching in the first weeks found the right number and hours everywhere. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
