What is ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme)?
ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme) provides healthcare to retired armed forces personnel and their dependants. Members are treated at ECHS polyclinics and referred to service hospitals or empanelled private hospitals, which are generally reimbursed at CGHS-linked rates. Empanelment is managed through the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare and regional ECHS centres.
Why it matters for hospitals
Veteran families are a sizeable, trust-driven segment, especially near cantonments and in towns with large retired service populations. Referral from polyclinics and word of mouth inside the veteran community matter far more here than ad spend.
How to put it into practice
- Confirm empanelment, covered specialties and current rate basis with your regional ECHS centre before any outreach.
- Build a simple relationship plan with nearby polyclinics: named contacts, quick referral acknowledgement and clear discharge summaries.
- Create an ECHS help page covering referral, documents and emergency admission rules, and keep it updated when circulars change.
- Engage veteran associations with health talks and screening days that respect the community’s own channels.
- Track ECHS referrals by polyclinic in the CRM so you know which relationships drive admissions.
The common mistake
Running generic ads to veterans instead of investing in the referral relationship and the experience at the admission desk, where most ECHS loyalty is won or lost.
An illustrative example
A hospital near a large cantonment assigned one coordinator to ECHS polyclinic referrals and sent each referring doctor a short status update after admission. Referrals became steadier and complaints about paperwork fell. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
