What is CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme)?
CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme) provides healthcare to central government employees, pensioners and their dependants in cities where the scheme operates. Beneficiaries use CGHS wellness centres and empanelled private hospitals, which are paid at notified CGHS rates. In October 2025 the government revised rates for around 2,000 procedures, the first broad revision in years, with tiered pricing.
Why it matters for hospitals
CGHS beneficiaries are a large, loyal and often older patient base in metros and state capitals, and empanelment can fill beds steadily. The revised, tiered rates changed the economics for many hospitals, so CGHS deserves a fresh look rather than an old assumption.
How to put it into practice
- Check your empanelment status, the specialties covered and the tier your hospital falls in under the current rate structure.
- Publish a plain CGHS page: who qualifies, the documents needed, how referral or direct access works for your hospital and a contact number.
- Train front desk and call centre teams on CGHS eligibility questions so pensioners and their families get one clear answer.
- Track CGHS admissions, average length of stay and realisation separately in your MIS to see true contribution.
- Reach retired government employees through pensioner associations and residential colony health talks rather than broad digital ads.
The common mistake
Assuming every caller knows the process and leaving CGHS details out of the website, which pushes families to call three times or choose another hospital.
An illustrative example
A multi-specialty hospital in a state capital re-examined CGHS after the 2025 rate revision, built a pensioner help page and held monthly talks in nearby government colonies. Planned cardiology and orthopaedic admissions from the segment rose steadily. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
