What is Hospital information system (HIS)?
A hospital information system (HIS) is the core software that runs hospital operations: patient registration, appointments, billing, pharmacy, lab, admissions and discharge. Many Indian HIS products also include EMR modules. HIS holds the record of what patients actually did, so it is the source of truth for linking marketing enquiries to real visits and revenue.
Why it matters for hospitals
Without HIS data, marketing can count leads but not patients or revenue. Connecting HIS to CRM is often the single biggest step towards measuring real return on marketing spend.
How to put it into practice
- Use one patient identifier, such as mobile number or MRN, that both HIS and CRM recognise.
- Agree which HIS events count as conversions: registration, consultation, admission or bill.
- Set up daily or real-time sync from HIS to CRM for appointments and visits.
- Check ABDM integration and data protection controls when choosing or upgrading HIS.
- Give marketing read access to aggregated reports, not raw clinical data.
The common mistake
Buying a CRM without planning the HIS integration, which leaves marketing guessing which leads became patients.
An illustrative example
A hospital linked its HIS appointment data to the CRM using phone numbers. For the first time, it could see which campaigns produced admissions rather than form fills. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
