What is ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account)?
ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) is a 14-digit health identity number under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. Citizens can create one voluntarily and link a simpler ABHA address. It allows health records from different hospitals, labs and apps to be linked and shared digitally, only with the patient’s consent, through ABDM-compliant systems.
Why it matters for hospitals
ABHA is becoming part of registration in many hospitals and links to government scheme workflows. For digital teams, it changes how patient records and identities may connect, and makes consent handling more visible.
How to put it into practice
- Offer ABHA creation or linking at registration with a clear, optional choice.
- Ensure your HIS or app vendor is ABDM integrated for record linking.
- Explain on the website how ABHA works and how records are shared only with consent.
- Train front desk staff to answer basic ABHA questions without pressure.
- Keep ABHA data separate from marketing lists unless the patient has given specific consent under DPDP rules.
The common mistake
Treating ABHA as a marketing data source; it is a health records identity, and using it for promotion without proper consent risks trust and compliance.
An illustrative example
A hospital added ABHA linking at the registration kiosk with a short explainer. Uptake rose without slowing queues, and staff faced fewer questions. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
