What is remarketing in healthcare?

Remarketing is showing ads to people who have previously visited a website or interacted with a brand. In healthcare it is restricted: major ad platforms limit personalised advertising based on health conditions, and India’s DPDP Act requires a lawful basis for using personal data, so hospitals must avoid audiences that reveal or imply a patient’s condition.

Why it matters for hospitals

Patients often research a procedure several times before booking, so a well-designed reminder can help. Poorly designed remarketing, such as following someone with IVF or cancer ads after a visit, can feel invasive, breach platform policy and damage trust. The line between useful and intrusive matters more in health than in any other category.

How to put it into practice

  • Build audiences from general pages such as the homepage, location pages or health check offers, not condition-specific pages.
  • Check current Google and Meta health policies before setting up any remarketing list; they change.
  • Use consent-based channels, such as opted-in WhatsApp or email, for follow-up on specific enquiries.
  • Cap frequency and keep remarketing creative neutral and informative.
  • Document your approach with your compliance team under the DPDP Act.

The common mistake

Creating remarketing lists from specialty pages for sensitive conditions, which can lead to ad disapprovals and makes patients feel watched.

An illustrative example

A hospital replaced condition-specific remarketing with a general ‘book your annual health check’ audience built from homepage visitors, and moved specialty follow-up to opted-in WhatsApp. Complaints stopped and bookings held steady. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
