What is Day care procedure?
A day care procedure is a treatment or surgery that needs hospital facilities but is completed with discharge within 24 hours, such as cataract surgery, some endoscopies, dialysis or chemotherapy sessions. Indian health insurance policies generally cover listed day care procedures without the usual minimum stay rule. Check the specific policy and IRDAI guidance for current wording.
Why it matters for hospitals
Day care work improves bed turnover and suits patients who want minimal time away from home and work. It is also an easy story to tell online, as long as suitability is decided by doctors and not by the ad.
How to put it into practice
- List day care procedures you offer on specialty pages with plain explanations and insurance notes.
- Explain the patient’s day: arrival time, preparation, recovery and who should accompany them.
- Make insurance coverage checks part of the enquiry flow.
- Track day care volume separately from inpatient admissions in reporting.
- Never promise same-day discharge in ads; say it depends on clinical assessment.
The common mistake
Marketing day care as a guaranteed quick fix, which sets the wrong expectation when a patient needs an overnight stay.
An illustrative example
A hospital launched a day care chemotherapy page explaining timings, food and insurance. Calls with practical questions fell and the unit’s booking list grew. (Composite example, not a specific hospital.)
