Rules that keep reports clean
UTM parameters tell Google Analytics where a visit came from. Hospitals lose most of this information because every team names campaigns differently: “Ortho Oct”, “knee-camp”, “KNEE_HYD”. The builder enforces one convention, specialty, unit, theme and month, so a year of campaigns can be compared in a single report.
- Use presets, not free text, for source and medium. “facebook”, “Facebook” and “fb” become three separate rows in reports.
- Never tag internal links on your own site. It overwrites the original source and breaks attribution.
- Tag the Google Business Profile website link. Without it, visits from your profile are mixed into organic search.
- For WhatsApp and phone, a reference code in the pre-filled message is the only way your desk can tell which campaign started the chat. Record it in the CRM.
Next steps: set up GA4 for a hospital website, add call tracking and offline conversion import, and read patient journey attribution. The UTM parameters glossary entry explains each field.

Keep source and medium to a fixed list, write everything in lower case with hyphens, and build campaign names from specialty, unit, theme and month so campaigns sort and compare cleanly.
